What this site is for
Last updated 2026-10-30
FDE Wiki exists because the material on forward deployed engineering is spread across a hundred places — vendor blog posts, two self-published books, conference talks, recruiter pages — and almost none of it is written to be read in sequence. This site is an attempt to put one account of the job in one place: what it is, how a deployment runs, what evidence makes someone credible at it, and what the market pays.
How it is written
Nothing here is reposted. Each article is written from primary sources — the handbooks, the public repositories, the interview transcripts and the reports listed under the directory — and then checked against what people who do the work say. Where a framework comes from someone else, the source is named in the article and again in the footer of the page.
40 articles are published in English, and the Chinese edition is a full translation of the same material, not a summary. The two editions are written to stay in step; where they differ, the difference is a translation judgement, not a different argument.
What it deliberately does not do
- It does not sell courses, certificates, or “become an FDE in 30 days” bundles. There is no product behind the content.
- It does not list salaries it cannot source. Where a number appears, the source and the method are next to it.
- It does not run a job board. The network is an open index of demand, talent and capability, reviewed by a person, with contact details kept private.
Who writes it
The site is maintained by a small editorial desk that reads the sources, does the distillation, and owns the errors. If something is wrong, the fastest fix is an email to contact@fdewiki.org — corrections are published as corrections rather than quietly edited away.
